Doric Colonial Cast Panels

A Tired Entrance Says More Than You Think – What to Know Before You Choose a Security Panel

Spring is when most homeowners finally notice what winter hid: a faded front door, a security screen that looks more “practical” than “welcoming,” an entrance that no longer matches the rest of the house. It’s a small thing, until it isn’t. The entrance is the first thing a visitor, buyer or valuer actually looks at.

The usual fix comes with a trade-off: security screens that protect but look purely functional, or decorative features that look good but add nothing structurally. Homeowners and builders are often left choosing one or the other.

Why this matters

An entrance has to do two jobs at once: protect the home and represent it. Get the balance wrong and you either compromise on security or end up with a door that looks like an afterthought, especially on federation and heritage-style homes where a plain flyscreen can look out of place against detailed brickwork and trim.

What Colonial Cast Panels actually are

Doric’s Colonial Cast Panels are decorative security and barrier door inserts, cast from 100% aluminium alloy and UV-stabilised powder coated for long-term colour retention. They’re built to the same corrosion and coating standards (AS/NZS 3715, AS 2331) that Doric applies across its architectural hardware range, so the decorative detail isn’t just cosmetic, it’s built to hold up to Australian conditions for decades.

Panels are supplied in two sections: a top (A) panel and a bottom (B) panel. Each comes with measurements both including and excluding the side lugs, so they can be fitted accurately within a standard door frame (frame not included).

The range at a glance

Colonial Classic designs, including Arch, Flower, Architrave, Gate, Rectangles and more, are suited to heritage and federation-style homes.

Choosing a finish

Panels are available in mill finish, Doric’s standard powder coat colour range, or non-standard/custom powder coat on request, so the finish can be matched to the rest of the home rather than chosen from whatever happens to be on hand. Select panels also offer a choice of decorative glass panels, giving a bit more flexibility in how the final look comes together.

What to look for when comparing options

  • Panel dimensions: always check both “with lugs” and “without lugs” measurements against your frame opening.

  • Style compatibility: some panels (like the Flower Sidelight) are designed to pair with specific door styles, so it’s worth checking which base design a decorative option suits.

  • Coating standard: for anything installed outdoors long-term, powder coat quality and corrosion resistance matter more than the pattern itself.

The outcome

A front entrance that does its job without looking like it’s only there to do its job: decorative, durable, and specified once rather than replaced in five years.
