When to Specify the DS2

The DS2 is the right specification for four distinct project contexts:

Internal windows and lower-level residential openings where security lockability is managed by the door hardware schedule, and the chainwinder’s function is ventilation control only. In these applications, specifying a keyed winder introduces unnecessary cylinder cost, keying decisions, and end-user key management without a corresponding security outcome.

Commercial and institutional settings — office buildings, schools, aged care facilities, and health environments — where windows are managed by facilities teams rather than individual occupants, and where a non-keyed commercial window chainwinder reduces hardware complexity across high window-count floor plates without compromising the building’s security configuration.

Mixed hardware schedules where some windows in a development require key lockability — upper floors, accessible entries, NCC-restricted openings — and others do not. Using the DS2 on non-restricted, non-security windows alongside the DS1 on compliant or secured openings allows builders to right-spec each window type without inflating hardware costs across the entire schedule.

Direct window chainwinder replacement on existing installations where the original winder was non-keyed and a like-for-like replacement is required without altering the security configuration of the opening.

Window Control & Operation

The slim fold-down lever sits flush against the winder body when not in use, preventing obstruction in tight window reveals and blind or curtain installations where a fixed-profile handle would create clearance and operational issues. This reduces end-user complaints and maintenance callbacks — a specification advantage that matters across high-density and strata programs where post-handover service costs are a genuine project consideration.

The lever spline is adjustable — handle orientation can be set to match every winder across a building by loosening the handle grub screw and re-securing in the desired position. For projects with multiple winders per dwelling, this delivers consistent handle orientation across every window without additional hardware or variation between units.

NCC Compliance & Child Safety

The DS2’s inbuilt Restriction Switch limits chain extension to comply with NCC requirements and the Kids Don’t Fly child safety initiative — and it does so independently of the cylinder configuration. There is no keyed cylinder in the DS2, and none is required for restriction to function. Material & Durability

The DS2 is built on the same material platform as the DS1 — Polesium™ base and housing with a stainless steel chain as standard — manufactured to the same specification and tested to the same standard.

Polesium™ base and housing — the same material specification as the DS1. The DS2 carries no material difference from its keyed counterpart: the same dimensional stability under operational load, the same UV and corrosion resistance, the same service life expectation across Australian residential and commercial conditions. Specifying the non-keyed DS2 does not represent a material downgrade — the Polesium™ platform is consistent across both variants.

Stainless steel chain standard — the same specification as the DS1, maintaining tensile strength and corrosion resistance across high-cycle operation without the degradation that affects galvanised or plated alternatives.

Neutral Salt and Spray tested in accordance with AZTO312.18 and AZTO313.18. Cycle tested on a 30kg window to over 30,000 cycles. Chain pull tested in accordance with AZTO332.18, achieving 3403.9N — a result that exceeds the 250N standard by a factor of 13. The DS2 carries the same independently verified test results as the DS1 because it is built on the same platform, to the same manufacturing standard.

Installation — Easylink System

The DS2 uses Doric’s Easylink fitment system — a one-way chain connection that allows the chain to be detached from the sash plate and reattached without tools. This reduces installation time per window on volume programs and allows the chainwinder body to be installed and adjusted independently of the sash plate connection — a measurable efficiency gain on projects with high window counts where installation consistency across units is critical.

For applications where keyed security is required — upper-floor openings, NCC-restricted windows with key override specified, or any opening requiring lockout against unauthorised operation — specify the DS1 Chainwinder. The DS1 is available with DS125 (5 Disc Wafer), DS126 (6 Disc Wafer), or DS127 (Multi Key Cylinder) options, supports keyed alike configurations across a full development, and shares the DS2’s footprint, Easylink system, and packer range for installation consistency across mixed hardware schedules.

What is the DS2 Chainwinder and when should it be specified? 

The DS2 is Doric’s non-keyed window chainwinder built on the same Polesium™ and stainless steel platform as the DS1. It is the correct specification for awning and casement window applications where ventilation control is the project requirement and key lockability is not — internal windows, commercial floor plates, lower-level residential openings, and direct non-keyed replacement programs.

Is the DS2 a lower-quality product than the DS1? 

No. The DS2 is built on the same platform as the DS1, manufactured to the same material specification, and tested to the same standard — including the same cycle test (30,000+ cycles on a 30kg window), the same chain pull result (3403.9N against a 250N standard), and the same corrosion testing (AZTO312.18 and AZTO313.18). The only difference is the absence of a cylinder. The DS2 is not a lower-grade product — it is the correct specification for applications where key lockability is not required.

What is the difference between the DS2 and DS1? 

The DS1 is the key lockable chainwinder, available with DS125, DS126, or DS127 cylinder options supporting keyed alike configurations. The DS2 is the non-keyed variant with no cylinder. Both share identical body dimensions, footprint, Easylink installation system, testing performance, and packer compatibility. Specify the DS1 where key lockability is required; specify the DS2 where it is not.

Is the DS2 NCC compliant for window restriction? 

Yes. The DS2 features the same inbuilt Restriction Switch as the DS1, limiting chain extension to comply with NCC requirements and the Kids Don’t Fly child safety initiative. Restriction is integrated within the winder body — no separate clips or additional components required. The restriction function operates independently of the cylinder, making the DS2 a fully compliant restricted window winder regardless of keying configuration.

Can the DS2 be used on NCC-restricted openings without a keyed cylinder? 

Yes. For openings where restriction is the compliance requirement and key lockability is not otherwise specified, the DS2 is a correct and cost-appropriate specification. The inbuilt Restriction Switch operates independently of the cylinder configuration — the absence of a cylinder does not affect the DS2’s compliance capability.

What window types does the DS2 suit? 

The DS2 suits awning and casement windows across residential and commercial applications where a non-keyed chain window winder is the correct hardware specification. Yes. The handle can be set to any position by loosening the handle grub screw and re-securing at the desired angle — ensuring uniform handle orientation across all winders in a dwelling or development without variation between units.

What colours is the DS2 available in? 

Black, White, and Silver are standard powder coat finishes. Custom colours are available on request.
