NSW Window Safety Compliance Requirements
Each year, more than 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia. While many of these falls result in serious injury, some have been fatal. Since 13 March 2018, child window safety requirements have applied under NSW law, and all strata buildings and owners’ corporations in NSW are required to have window safety devices installed on all common property windows.
A compliant window restrictor must:
- Restrict the window opening to less than 125mm
- Be tested to exceed 250N, as required under the NSW strata act and the Building Code of Australia (BCA)
- Meet ICP005 — Protection of Openable Windows, the industry standard governing these devices
Owners’ corporations and strata buildings that have not met this requirement risk being fined. If you’re assessing compliance for a strata building or established dwelling, the current DS255U and DS255 both meet these same requirements.
Why the Range Was Updated
The SS0006 has been superseded as part of the normal evolution of Doric’s window restrictor range. The DS255U and DS255 carry forward the same universal, key-free restriction principle in an updated design — this is a standard product line update, not a response to any fault in the original SS0006.
